Take the Bus or Train from Schiphol to Amsterdam

You have a long-awaited city trip to Amsterdam coming up. You already booked the plane tickets to Schiphol Airport and an accommodation in the city. However, one question remains. As Schiphol Airport is located just outside the city, how will you travel from the airport to Amsterdam? No need to worry! Amsterdam has an extensive public transport network that enables to you travel from Schiphol Airport to the city centre in a quick and easy fashion. Amsterdam’s public transport network is so elaborate that taking the bus or train is probably even faster than fetching a cab. What’s more, it’s much cheaper!
Travelling to Amsterdam by Train
Your first option is to travel to Amsterdam by train. Are you heading towards the city centre? Then your fastest option is the train to Amsterdam Centraal. This train leaves about 8 times an hour and takes you to the heart of the city in merely 14 to 17 minutes. Travelling towards the western part of the city? You can either take a train to Amsterdam Sloterdijk or Amsterdam Lelylaan, which departs every 15 minutes. Finally, travellers heading towards the southern part of the city must hop into a train to the station Amsterdam Zuid. No less than 12 trains an hour travel to this station. These trains have different destinations outside Amsterdam, such as Utrecht, Nijmegen, Eindhoven, Groningen, Enschede and Almere.
Travelling to Amsterdam by Bus
In addition to the train, it’s also possible to take the bus to Amsterdam. Bus 397 is also known as the Amsterdam Airport Express. This bus leaves every 7,5 minutes during the day, and every 10-15 minutes at night. This bus takes you from Schiphol Airport to the Elandsgracht via the Olympic Stadium, the Museumplein and the Rijksmuseum. The trip to the Elandsgracht takes approximately 35 to 40 minutes. Public Transport Tickets
Are you planning to travel by train? You can buy a ticket at every train station. Note that train tickets are only valid on the day of purchase, so don’t buy a return ticket if you’re staying multiple days! Depending on the station, a train ticket from Schiphol to Amsterdam will cost around 4 to 5 euro. A bus e-ticket costs 5 euro (one way) or 10 euro (return). If you’re staying in Amsterdam for a few days, the Amsterdam Travel Ticket might be a more budget-friendly option. This ticket gives you unlimited access to both the train and the bus within Amsterdam for either 1, 2 or 3 days.
